FMZ Cellular – MTN Proudly Supports Successful Seaboard Trophy Weekend in Knysna

FMZ Cellular – MTN was proud to be one of the sponsors of this year’s Seaboard Trophy Weekend in Knysna, an event that once again showcased not only competitive golf but also the incredible spirit of friendship, camaraderie, and community service that defines the Nomads Golf Club.

The weekend brought together golfers from Western Province Nomads, Boland Nomads, Border Nomads Golf Club, Eastern Cape Nomads Golf Club, and Southern Cape Nomads, creating an atmosphere where lifelong friendships were strengthened, new connections were formed, and the true values of Nomads were celebrated both on and off the golf course.

From the traditional morning gathering with a Johnnie Walker Blonde and milk to the welcome refreshment of an ice-cold Castle Lite at the halfway house, the weekend was filled with memorable moments. The entertainment provided by Tigger Reunert and Glynn ensured the festivities continued long after the final putts had been made.

Although heavy rain unfortunately forced the cancellation of Sunday’s monthly game, it did little to dampen the success of the event and the positive spirit shared by all who attended.

Supporting More Than Just Golf

While the Seaboard Trophy is a celebration of golf, it also highlights one of the most important pillars of the Nomads Golf Club: the Andrew Mentis Endowment Fund, the charitable heart of the organisation.

Established in 1967 by Nomads founder member and businessman Andrew Mentis, the fund was created with a simple yet powerful vision: to support those less fortunate through meaningful, tangible contributions that make a lasting difference in local communities.

Unlike many charitable initiatives that contribute towards operational expenses, the Andrew Mentis Endowment Fund focuses on funding specific projects and assets such as building renovations, vehicles, water tanks, medical equipment, educational resources, and other infrastructure that directly benefits communities in need.

A unique aspect of the programme is that each Nomads club selects a local registered charity annually. The responsibility falls to the club’s Vice-Captain, who leads fundraising efforts throughout the year. These initiatives culminate in the annual Andrew Mentis Golf Day, where funds or completed projects are officially handed over to the chosen beneficiary.

Before his passing in 2018 at the age of 98, Andrew Mentis ensured the sustainability of the fund by donating R1.25 million to establish an endowment. The interest generated from this investment continues to be distributed among the 12 Nomads clubs across South Africa, allowing them to continue their charitable work year after year.

Since its inception, the fund has raised and distributed approximately R50 million, with clubs collectively contributing around R2 million annually. As a registered Non-Profit Company (NPC) and Public Benefit Organisation (PBO), the foundation also enables businesses to support community initiatives through Corporate Social Investment programmes while benefiting from Section 18A tax-deductible certificates.

FMZ Cellular – MTN’s Commitment to Community

As a business deeply rooted in the communities we serve, FMZ Cellular – MTN is honoured to support events such as the Seaboard Trophy Weekend, where the impact extends far beyond the golf course.

The partnership aligns with FMZ’s commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen communities, create opportunities, and improve the lives of those around us. Through the work of the Andrew Mentis Endowment Fund, every sponsorship, donation, and golf day participation contributes towards meaningful projects that leave a lasting legacy.

Celebrating Success

FMZ Cellular – MTN would like to congratulate Southern Cape Nomads on their outstanding achievement in securing both the Seaboard Trophy and the Boland Trophy. Their determination, teamwork, and sportsmanship were evident throughout the weekend.

We would also like to thank Andrew Mentis, the Nomads Golf Club leadership, fellow sponsors, event organisers, and all five participating clubs for making this year’s event a tremendous success.

The Seaboard Trophy Weekend is a reminder that golf is about more than competition. It is about friendships, fellowship, and giving back to the communities around us. FMZ Cellular – MTN is proud to have been part of an event that embodies these values and looks forward to continuing its support of both Nomads Golf Club and the impactful work of the Andrew Mentis Endowment Fund.
